Tom and Pat Cory of Cory Photography spoke at the May 8th, 2008 Sweetwater Camera Club meeting!
By Sweetwater Camera Club
Tom and Pat CoryThis month the Sweetwater Camera Club had as its guest lecturers, Pat and Tom Cory, who have been photographing nature and hosting photographic travel tours for many years. In keeping with this month’s contest subject, they showed some of their favorite close-up photography images. Especially interesting were their "pictures in a picture" views of flowers. Tom showed us his "discovered landscapes" inside the close-ups of irises and other beautiful flowers. At the May meeting, they shared some of their scenic calendars and presented a list of their workshops/tours they will be offering for the next several months.
According to Pat Cory, for the past 20-something years she and Tom have left their home on Signal Mountain, high above Chattanooga, to give photo lessons and travel tours in a wide variety of places throughout the world.  Some of the places they go include Iceland, Italy, Colorado, Utah and the Smokies. An upcoming article about them will be published in SKY Magazine’s September issue.
A few years ago, Tom and Pat hosted a Sweetwater Camera Club field trip to Berry College. Pat mentioned that during their tours they try to work one-on-one with each photographer to provide tips and tricks.  They work with beginners, intermediate and professional photographers to provide a high quality learning experience. On May 13, they will be hosting an evening at the Chattanooga Aquarium which will be entitled “Picture the Aquarium.”

You may learn more about Cory Photography and their tours/workshops at http://www.tomandpatcory.com .

Our contest this month was “Close-Up Photography.” During a recent conversation I had with Kent Owings of the SCC Contest Committee, we clarified the subject matter of the Macro and Close-Up contest to include “close-up photos” that do not have to come close to a one-to-one ratio with the focal plane of the camera. These days, cameras have many different sizes of sensors and electronic capture devices which make the traditional meaning of the term “macro” somewhat fuzzy and out-dated. This means that you may submit entries that show close-ups of objects and processes without being concerned about whether your image fits the definition of “macro photography.” In recent years, photographic lens manufacturers have stretched the meaning of the term “macro” to include any lens grouping that can take close-up photos. In part they have done this to sell more lenses, and in part to lower the cost of lens production. For more information on this and other contests please visit http://sweetwatercameraclub.org/contests/contest-topics/2008 .

As always, Visitors are welcome to attend our meetings at no charge. If you want to maintain a continuing interest in the many facets of photography, join the Sweetwater Camera Club. Participation in the contests is voluntary. You are welcome to be a spectator as well as a participant. We strive to provide a high quality learning experience and a motivating, entertaining evening for all. We hope to see you the second Thursday of each month at the Sweetwater Camera Club meetings!
