Upcoming Field Trip

March Field Trip: Rednation Pow-Wow

The 6th Annual Rednation Pow-Wow will be held March 20-21, 2010 at the Clinton Nature Preserve in Winston, Georgia.

The location of the Clinton Nature Preserve is 8702 Ephesus Church Road.  If you take I-20 west to Post Road and then take a left at the exit, you won't get lost. :)

There is a small charge for admission, which is $5 for ages 12-55, $3 for 55+, and $3 for kids 5-12.  Children under 5 are free.

The Rednation Pow-Wow provides an excellent opportunity to photograph many dancers, and their Grand Entrance ceremonies are always inspiring.  My family has attended the Pow-Wow the past two years and we have always had a great time.  There are walking trails on the preserve too, which allow for more nature photography as well.

Gates are open from 10am - 6pm Saturday and Sunday with the Grand Entry held at noon on Saturday and 1pm on Sunday.

Designer-Photographer Andrew Hughes spoke recently at the Sweetwater Camera Club on August 14, 2008
By Richard Nichols
This month we had a very interesting and unique guest speaker, Andrew Hughes of Lawrenceville, GA. His website is located at http://www.masqueman.com. Andrew has worked as a graphic designer for the past 18 years, creating logos, brochures, websites, videos, etc. His presentation was entitled, "Approaching the Photo as a Graphic Designer." Andy shared some of his special techniques and showed and discussed his favorite creative endeavors.

One of the continuing questions that photographers ask is, "how can I sell my work?" One answer is to use photography as one of several tools that go into creating a final commercial product. If you can do that - combine artistic talent with art, design and photography, you have overcome one of the biggest hurdles between shooting for your own enjoyment and pleasing a client. Andrew has definitely overcome the "amateur to commercial photographer" hurdle.

Andy discussed his personal philosophy as an artist. He showed us several of his pet projects, including WWII Veterans portraiture, motorcycle racing photography and creative Wedding photography. As part of the program he discussed how to "apply digital makeup" to portraits and showed us some photoshop techniques that he has found useful. His portrait manipulations were nothing short of amazing.

Everyone who came for this lecture was truly blessed to have had the opportunity to meet and listen to Andrew. He and his work are quite inspiring.
