Photographer David Akoubian demonstrates Lensbabies during the Sweetwater Camera Club August Field Trip
If you have a fast connection to the Internet, you may enjoy this video of photographer David Akoubian’s introduction to an SLR lens, the Lensbaby. A "Lensbaby" is a flexible lens attachment created by the folks at Lensbaby.com which alters the light rays impending upon a camera’s digital sensor, creating an area of strictly controlled focus, beyond which everything else is blurred. On a sunny Saturday morning, August 30th, 2008, David spent 30 minutes in the heart of the Atlanta Botanical Garden discussing the features and advantages of the Lensbaby flexible lens attachment. You see him speaking here in front of the Dorthy Chapman Fuqua Conservatory to an audience that included several members of the Sweetwater Camera Club as well as members of the Atlanta Photographic Society. Above right, you will find a picture of David using a basic Lensbaby. Click on it to enlarge . . . below the embedded video you will see the resulting Frog photo. Notice that the foreground and background have become quite blurry, while the frog’s eyes are sharp. That is exactly what a lensbaby can do for you.

This month we had a very interesting and unique guest speaker, Andrew Hughes of Lawrenceville, GA. His website is located at http://www.masqueman.com. Andrew has worked as a graphic designer for the past 18 years, creating logos, brochures, websites, videos, etc. His presentation was entitled, "Approaching the Photo as a Graphic Designer." Andy shared some of his special techniques and showed and discussed his favorite creative endeavors. One of the continuing questions that photographers ask is, "how can I sell my work?" One answer is to use photography as one of several tools that go into creating a final commercial product. If you can do that - combine artistic talent with art, design and photography, you have overcome one of the biggest hurdles between shooting for your own enjoyment and pleasing a client. Andrew has definitely overcome the "amateur to commercial photographer" hurdle.Andy discussed his personal philosophy as an artist. He showed us several of his pet projects, including WWII Veterans portraiture, motorcycle racing photography and creative Wedding photography. As part of the program he discussed how to "apply digital makeup" to portraits and showed us some photoshop techniques that he has found useful. His portrait manipulations were nothing short of amazing.Everyone who came for this lecture was truly blessed to have had the opportunity to meet and listen to Andrew. He and his work are quite inspiring.

It has been truly wonderful seeing the member participation we’ve been getting at our monthly contests. I know a number of our members are interested in exhibiting their work beyond the borders of our club, and I’m certain the community would truly enjoy the talents our club members have to share. As we approach October, […]
