Heads Up On the
Upcoming Contest Topics
Our contest chair, Lesa Wills, has put together a 2007 Monthly Competition Topics chart beginning with March 2007. This chart should be available at our February meeting. In this chart, she has listed the topic for the 2007 contests, as well as a short description of just what she is looking for in entries for each month. To give you time to think about your entries for upcoming competitions, I am listing below the topic descriptions for the February and March 2007 contests.
February 2007 – Children. This is pretty self-explanatory, and as the topic descriptions in the above-referenced chart begin with the March contest, I’ll leave this one as is!
March 2007 – Elderly People. Get a picture of the people who have history written on their faces, outlined on their hands, and the weight of the world on their backs. Your picture should tell a story with lots of depth and drama.

I stumbled on this website just the other day. It’s a blog format with do-it-yourself ideas for photographic accessories, such as backdrop stands, softboxes for hotshoe flashes, etc. Definitely some helpful ideas for keeping costs down in our photographic endeavors!
Tips and Tricks
“Blur Frame in Photoshop”
Author: Tyger
While there are various ways to create a blur frame, this particular tutorial will walk you through the easiest way to do it in Photoshop 7 (though the same steps will work in Photoshop 5-C2).
Step 1: Copy the layer of the original photo and place that layer as the top layer.
Step 2: Using the guides to outline the frame, use the square selection tool to select the outline of the frame.
Step 3: With the selection still active delete that selection
Step 4: With the selection still active, do a reverse selection by pressing ‘ctrl’ + ‘shift’ + ‘I’. This will highlight the frame border.
Step 5: Add a gaussion blur to your liking, and if you like, adjust the colour, saturation etc.
Step 6: With the selection still active do a reverse selection by pressing ‘ctrl’ + ‘shift’ + ‘I’.
Step 7: With the selection still active, create a stroke, go under ‘Edit’ > ‘Stroke’ (The example below uses a 5px width with white colour, but you can do what you like here).
Step 8: Adjust the original image which should be on the bottom layer accordingly, whether you want to move it, scale etc. and voila!

Comments
Just wanted to thank you so much for mentioning me and my workshops in this issue of the Sweetwater Camera Club newsletter. I love your new format!
The Aquarium workshop is unfortunately filled (with a waiting list of 14 people!), and the Callaway Gardens class with Mark Johnson is also filled with a shorter waiting list.
My “How to Create Dazzling Digital Slide Shows” class on March 3rd, however, does still have openings but is almost full. Perhaps you might want to replace a small write-up about this seminar with the one just posted. (Details about this class on my website.)
Many thanks again for all the publicity. I really appreciate it.
~Charles
